What Physicists Do

Everyone is invited to attend the Department of Physics & Astronomy’s weekly series of lectures, demonstrations, and films called What Physicists Do. Each semester a small number of students choose to take the series for credit.

To enroll you should have a serious interest in science. Physics majors and prospective majors at all levels are encouraged to register for the series. Others, please see me if you are not sure whether enrollment is appropriate for you. The course may be taken up to three times. It meets some elective requirements for both the B.A. and B.S. in physics. Please see the catalog for details.

If you do enroll, you are, of course, expected to attend the series. In addition, to earn the one unit, you are asked to write a paper, approximately ten pages in length, on one of the topics covered in the series. Your paper should start with what is said in the lecture and then continue with your own (usually library) research. The paper should be written at your own level; it is useless to copy material you do not understand. To gather information for your paper, I suggest you look at How to Get a Better Grade on Your Paper, Finding and Citing References, Favorite Astronomy Links, and Favorite Physics Links.

The paper is due at the usual time and place on the last Monday of the semester, one week after the last lecture. It must have the cover sheet attached and signed.

It is possible to give a lecture in the series instead of writing a paper. This must be arranged before the semester begins.
