Dr. Sommargren received his Ph.D. in Optics from the Institute of Optics, University of Rochester. He joined the University of California's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he has worked in the Laser Directorate on diffraction, beam propagation, holography, interferometry and optical metrology. He is presently working on extreme ultraviolet projection lithography, partially coherent imaging and absolute accuracy diffraction interferometry. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, recipient of several R&D 100 Awards, Topical Editor on interferometry and optical testing for Applied Optics, and holds over twenty patents related to optical metrology.
